Izumozaki Town Hall holds a free lecture presentation about CKD on Sunday in March every year. This year’s theme is “Kidney and Stroke”. A combination of five healthy lifestyle factors, including not smoking, maintaining a proper weight, limiting alcohol intake, exercising regularly, and having a healthy diet, is associated with a lower incidence of stroke (Circulation. 2008;118:947-54) as well as CKD (Hypertens Res. 2013;36:328-33). A combination of four healthy lifestyle factors, including not smoking, maintaining a proper weight, limiting alcohol intake, and exercising regularly, is also associated with a lower incidence of atrial fibrillation (Int J Cardiol. 2016;203:46-9), a well-known risk factor for ischemic stroke.A combination of four healthy lifestyle factors, including no current smoking, no obesity, regular physical activity, and a healthy diet, is associated with a substantially lower risk of coronary events regardless of the genetic risk (N Engl J Med. 2016;375:2349-58). We don’t know about our genes, but a combination of healthy lifestyle factors can dramatically help in preventing several diseases regardless of our genetic risks. We take exercise to prevent fall and subsequent hip fracture, as we are singing a song entitled “Grandfather’s Clock” written by Henry C. Work.
