Reports of World Kidney Campaign in Shanghai
World Kidney Day (WKD) is a global awareness campaign aimed at raising awareness of the importance of our kidneys. The theme of this year Is “kidney health for everyone everywhere.” In order to better advocate the activities, the branch of nephrology affiliated to the Shanghai medical doctors’ association, led by professor Nan Chen, has brought a great feast of kidney-related public science education to Shanghai in March.
As the beginning of the campaign, a collection of popular science articles on kidney protections were well elaborated by famous nephrologists in Shanghai and shared freely online. Real life cases and delicate photos were added to make it more interesting and easier for the locals to understand how to protect kidneys. The number of reposts was more than 100k+ with favorable comments from the public.
In addition, a series of 33 kidney related lectures were organized in different communities in Shanghai with more than 1000 local residents involved. The lectures on the early detection of kidney diseases and renal protections, highly praised by the locals, helped them unveil the mysterious mask of kidney diseases. More similar activities were eagerly expected in the future.
The climax of the campaign was marked by the free medical consultations on the world kidney day. More than 400 nephrologists and senior nurses from 35 famous teaching hospitals offered free medical consultations to over 5000 chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients in the medical centers in Shanghai. Besides, simple physical exams including blood pressure and capillary glucose monitoring were also provided for the locals. The lively scenes, which was broadly broadcasted by local TV, won applauses from all society and drew more attention on the CKD community.
The WKD campaign has been a great sensation in Shanghai. The number of the participants, the scale of the activities and the influence it left are all unprecedented in history. Though the WKD campaign has now come to an end, the branch of nephrology affiliated to the Shanghai medical doctors’ association will continue to spare no efforts for the improvement of CKD.
