WORLD KIDNEY DAY – 13/03/2014 Organized on behalf of the International Society of Nephrology. THEAME: CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE AND AGING Western Hospital, Borella of No. 218, Cotta Road, Colombo – 08, celebrated the 09th World Kidney Day on 13th of March 2014 at the Hospital premises. Western Hospital has been celebrating the World Kidney D ay consecutively every year from its inauguration in 2006. Western Hospital is the pioneer specialist hospital in Sri Lanka, during the First Chronic Heamodialysis and associated with the first live and cadaveric Kidney Transplant in Sri Lanka. The programme this year, like done in every year included an Opening Ceremony followed by Free Kidney Screening Clinic. Special features of this clinic were all Blood Tests related to kidney, Urine Tests and an US Scan of the Kidney and Nephrologist Consultation free if charge by Prof. Rezvi Sheriff for those found to be having some Kidney Disease at preliminary screening. This is done as our Corporate Social Responsibility Activity. The theme for this year is ‘Chronic Kidney Disease and Aging”. Opening Ceremony was held from 8.30 a.m. to 9.30a.m. and the Chief Guest wad Dr. Palitha Abeykoon, President , Sri Lanka Medical Association and International Health Specialist who freed a Pigeon to mark freedom from Kidney Disease. Colored Balloons were released to spread the message and make awareness of Kidney Disease which is now a global epidemic. Prof. Rezvi Sheriff made the Welcome Speech and Dr. Palitha Abeykoon delivered his address. Dr. Nadeeka Rathnamalala, Nephrologistmade presentation on ‘chronic Kidney Disease and Old Age”. There was also representation from Sri Lanka Kidney Patients Association and president of the Kidney Patients Association Mrs. Chamila Krishanthi gave a speech on her experience as a Kidney Transplant Patient. Free Kidney Screening Clinic was held from 9.30 am to 5.30 pm.
