There are certain things you can do yourself to prevent kidney disease. Eating less salt is one of them, and very important! Too much salt increases blood pressure and can damage the kidneys. Almost everyone (85% of the Dutch population) eats more salt than the nationally recommended maximum of 6 grams per day. This is mostly because salt is added as a flavour enhancer in a lot of products: in pizza and soup, but also in cookies and bread. To facilitate eating less salt, the Dutch Kidney Foundation will launch: www.zoutmeter.com on World Kidney Day. This tool gives insight into the daily salt intake and provides alternatives to enable individuals to cut back on their daily salt intake. The website www.nierstichting.nl/zout is also filled with inspiration to easily and tastefully reduce salt intake, for example by the use of herbs and spices.
