On March 12, 2025, Srinakharinwirot University (SWU) officially launched the “SWU Healthy Canteen” initiative, a transformative effort aimed at promoting healthier eating habits among students and staff. This event reflects the university’s commitment to creating a safe, nutritious, and sustainable food environment on campus.
The key focus of the initiative is to reduce excessive sugar, fat, and especially salt in meals offered at the university’s canteens. With rising concerns over kidney disease, high blood pressure, and other health risks associated with high sodium intake, this program encourages food vendors to adopt healthier cooking practices. Each participating canteen is now required to offer at least one healthy menu option that aligns with these principles.
A Collaborative Effort for Better Health
The SWU Healthy Canteen initiative was made possible through the collaboration of university administrators, faculty members, students, food vendors, and key health organizations, including the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) and the SWU-Well Being Club. These partnerships aim to enhance food safety, nutrition literacy, and sustainable dining practices within the university.
During the event, Mr. Pongsak Thongratana, Director of the Office of Organizational Health Promotion at ThaiHealth, delivered a special talk on the role of universities in fostering a health-conscious community. Additionally, a pledge-signing ceremony took place, where all stakeholders committed to sustaining and expanding this healthy food initiative across the campus
