Raising Kidney Health Awareness in the Remote Hilly region of Taplejung

Location

Phungling, Taplejung, Nepal

Date of event

March 14, 2025 11:00

On 14th March 2025, KHDC Nepal and BPKIHS jointly celebrated World Kidney Day 2025 at BHSC Palungwa Chowk, Phungling, Taplejung, in collaboration with Phungling Municipality.

This program held special significance as Phungling, Taplejung is a remote hilly region with limited access to healthcare services. KHDC Nepal, under the leadership of Prof. Sanjib Kumar Sharma, has been actively working in the region—screening for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as kidney disease, hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases, while also focusing on healthcare worker capacity building and community awareness initiatives.

Aligned with this year’s global theme, “Are Your Kidneys OK? Detect Early, Protect Kidney Health,” the event aimed to raise awareness about kidney health and NCD prevention. The session covered the following key topics:
✅ Importance of maintaining kidney health
✅ Overview and significance of the World Kidney Day 2025 theme
✅ Risk factors and symptoms of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)
✅ Special emphasis on hypertension, diabetes, widespread use of NSAIDs, and the increasing burden of CKD among migrant workers
✅ ABCDE screening approach for early detection of kidney disease
✅ Preventive measures to minimize the risk and slow the progression of kidney disease

The program saw active participation from local ward representatives, teachers, BHSC healthcare workers, KHDC team members, and patients, with around 30 attendees. The event fostered interactive discussions, making the session engaging, informative, and impactful for all participants.
