SoundCafe Leicester is a charity for people who have experienced homelessness, with opportunities for people to enjoy creative writing and other activities in a safe, creative space. On 10 March, we celebrated World Kidney Day, and this was a theme for Guests’ artwork and creative writing. Further information on SoundCafe is available on: http://www.soundcafe.org.uk
As a volunteer at SoundCafe, who facilitates creative writing, I wrote the following as an example of a short story about kidneys – incorporating parts of their anatomy. I thought you might like a copy!
PAPILLA, KING OF THE NEPHRONS
The Nephrons from the planet Glomerulus started to attack us as we flew in our Bowman’s capsule through the loop of Henle in the outermost galaxy. Suddenly, the proximal convoluted tubule of our Bowman’s capsule went wrong, and we were stuck in space. “Look out, there’s Papilla, King of the Nephrons, climbing through the window!” shouted Major Calyx, Captain of our Bowman’s capsule. “Fear not, Captain”, said Papilla, whose face was shaped like a purple pyramid with green and maroon spots. “I bring peace. The Nephrons are tired of fighting you earthlings, it’s not good for the health of our kidneys, and we just want some peace and quiet for a change.”
