Kidney diseases are increasing very rapidly to epidemic proportions worldwide. In order to increase public awareness about kidney diseases, World Kidney Day is observed on the second Thursday of March every year. This year, it falls on 8th March 2012 and the motto is “Donate-Kidneys for life-Receive” which focuses on Transplantation. As a preparatory to this occasion, and keeping in mind the convenience of the public, the Medical Social Work Department of MPUH organized a “Walkathon” in Nadiad on Sunday, 4th March 2012.

Family members of a cadaver kidney donor, Sunil Yesambre, who was the driver of Amul Dairy MD, were felicitated on this occasion. Mr.Rahul Kumar, MD of Amul Dairy was the Chief Guest. In his address, Mr Rahul Kumar appreciated the noble act of kindness demonstrated by the family members of Sunil Yesambre.  Sunil had lost his life in a road accident, but by donating his kidneys, his family members helped to give healthy life to two kidney failure patients. He also said that Tamil Nadu has done a good job in promoting cadaver kidney transplant in that State. Dr. Mahesh Desai, Medical Director and Managing Trustee of MPUH said in his speech that the Tamil Nadu Government is giving the costly immunosuppressant medicines, free of cost, to the patients undergoing kidney transplant in Tamil Nadu. He also commended the family members for the noble act.

The felicitation programme was followed by Walkathon which was inaugurated by   Dr.Mahesh Desai and Mr.Rahul Kumar.  Around 700 people from various walks of life participated in the Walkathon.
