Nutrition and Diabetes

If you are diabetic

If you are diabetic, be sure that you keep your blood sugar levels where they need to be to stay healthy . People with diabetes are at high risk for kidney disease. Also, it is important to make sure that you are not fat and that your weight is in the right range.

Once chronic kidney disease is diagnosed it is usually necessary to adjust your diet. Whether you have type 1 or type 2 diabetes, what you eat affects your blood sugar. Following a meal plan to keep your blood sugar at a healthy level may prevent CKD from developing.

Talk with your doctor or dietitian about your blood sugar targets and ask how often you should check your blood sugar level. The results from your blood sugar checks will tell you if your diabetes care plan is working.

Regular eating and exercising habits can help keep your blood sugar at a healthy level.

  • Eat about the same amount of nutrition each day.
  • Eat your meals and snacks at about the same times each day.
  • Do not skip meals or snacks.
  • Take your medicines at the same times each day.
  • Participate in physical activity every day.
