Here is a sample of successful and inspiring events organised on the occasion of World Kidney Day. Kudos to the organisers!
A CD, called 'Close to You', that was made by the nephrology and dialysis team and patients of the University Hospital UZ Brussels was on sale and the World Kidney day organizers also arrangeda small exposition of a film and of poems made by dialysis patients about how they experience their treatment.
Paul Beerkens, President of the Dutch Kidney Foundation, then President of IFKF and Co-Chair of the WKD 2009 Steering Committee, on the occasion of World Kidney Day 2009 approached Ab Klink, Dutch Minister of Health, to put CKD and the related health and economic issues more firmly on the Dutch public health agenda. During the recent fundraising gala dinner of the Dutch Kidney Foundation 450 guests donated over $600.000 for prevention and innovative programs related to CKD.
EKHA and WKD joined forces in March 2009 to organise a seminar at the European Parliament: 'Chronic kidney disease and hypertension – Twin challenges for 21st century Europe". The event pursued critical advocacy campaigns on CKD and ensured that last year's 'wake-up call' was followed by concrete policy measures. An eminent panel of speakers highlighted the cause and effect of Europe's hypertension and cardiovascular epidemics and their inseparable link to CKD. Speakers also presented innovative European initiatives that are working towards improving the identification and management of kidney disease.
In the UK, the Kidney Alliance co-ordinated the national celebrations, with a mini march ending outside the Houses of Parliament, and a special event for MPs and Peers to highlight recent developments in kidney care and disease detection, and the importance of maintaining the effort to improve and expand services for kidney patients. Many local Kidney Patient Associations were out in force at local hospitals and shopping centres educating the public about the causes of kidney disease. They encouraged people to have their blood pressure checked, to stop smoking, eat healthily and stay active.
During the 6 through 16 of March, the Department of Renal Services, Ministry Of Health, Negara Brunei Darussalam raised awareness through TV and radio coverage. - topics included treatment options, transplantation and preventative measures.
The New Zealand Kidney Foundation organised the screening of Members of Parliament and had an information booth in the Parliament on WKD.
On World Kidney day 2009, a march around Al-Azhar Park, the biggest and centrally located Park in Cairo. During this day, volunteers tried to educate the public about kidney diseases and organized free screening in the park. Lots of celebrities and governmental representatives attended this day.
