Did you know that almost 1 in 5 (18%) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults have signs of chronic kidney disease? Although Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders represent less than 2.5% of the national population, they account for approximately 9% of people commencing kidney replacement therapy each year. In Australia, the Australian and New Zealand Society of Nephrology, the Renal Society of Australasia and Kidney Health Australia have jointly chosen to celebrate this year’s theme by focusing on Indigenous kidney disease. To ensure this year’s message has significant impact, the main event on World Kidney Day will be a parliamentary breakfast and roundtable at Parliament House in Canberra.
