When surgery is recommended for kidney disease or kidney cancer, it can be done using open surgery (through one large incision) or using a minimally invasive approach (through a few small incisions) with traditional laparoscopy or with robotic-assisted-surgery.
Depending on the condition and the location of the tumor, it might be possible to perform a partial nephrectomy or kidney-sparing surgery. The goal is to remove only the diseased part of the kidney and keep the healthy part in place. The surgical platform of Intuitive Surgical can enable the surgeon to perform a partial nephrectomy when it is right for the patient.
Studies show patients who have kidney-sparing surgery are less likely to suffer from chronic kidney disease (CKD) or need dialysis compared to those who lose their entire kidney.1

We have great ambitions for 2017. Our 2017 theme, Kidney Disease & Obesity – Healthy Lifestyle for Healthy Kidneys, is one of major importance and we have many challenges to face.
We have a large awareness campaign to run to promote preventive behaviors, encourage early screening of people with diabetes and hypertension, and stimulate positive thinking about organ donation and transplantation. We need the means to do so and you can help!
